“The Planet Krypton”
Superman (1978)

Compared to his bombastic theme, Williams here strikes an almost regal chord for the reveal of Superman’s home planet.  This version is performed by the Cincinnati Pops under the direction of Erich Kunzel, and begins with a solo trumpet that builds into a full orchestral flourish.

I would’ve been five years old when my dad took me to see this film at Totem Theaters in Anchorage. I think I can remember shouting at the giant S as it flew away from the audience during the opening credits. This song, however, is the tune that crept into my guts, the slow approach of Krypton and its dying red sun, right before the trial of General Zod & his lackeys…
